
Achieving zero-emission transportation and deploying smart mobility systems is essential to meeting climate goals, enhancing safety, and maintaining European technological competitiveness. This transition requires new materials, advanced sensing solutions and reliable automation technologies. LIST contributes to this by developing lightweight and sustainable materials with functional coatings. It also designs autonomous sensors for next-generation mobility and prototypes innovative driver-assistance systems. In addition, LIST validates connected, cooperative, and automated mobility solutions. Together, these efforts support a cleaner, smarter, and more competitive future for Luxembourg and Europe.
Securing logistics flows is now a major issue for European competitiveness, a challenge addressed by the “Transport resilience against Cyber and Non-Cyber Events to prevent Network Disruption” (TRANSCEND) project. This initiative places LIST at the heart of transport chain protection, through approaches combining risk analysis, cyber-resilience, and infrastructure optimization. TRANSCEND thus enables the design of more robust freight networks capable of withstanding the growing disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions, regulatory changes, or climate-related hazards.
This focus on mobility is fully aligned with LIST’s strategic ambition through the development of the MOBICLUS project, carried out in collaboration with Indosuez Wealth Management and the Climate Foundation. It aims to better understand and transform employee mobility practices within Luxembourg’s economic activity zones. By combining data, behavioural science, and employee feedback, the project analyzes daily commutes through two complementary surveys. Through an interactive dashboard that models environmental, organizational, and social impacts, MOBICLUS provides economic and institutional stakeholders with a strategic tool to design usage-based, human-centred mobility policies.
This collaborative dynamic also extends to the digital transformation of regions, notably through the Smart City Hub initiative. This platform is designed to support cities and municipalities in their transition to smart solutions in a secure, neutral, and gradual manner. It offers municipalities a structured framework for experimentation and support: exploring solutions, testing them in real-world conditions, and then providing support until their adoption, all while complying with regulatory requirements related to data protection and artificial intelligence. This approach allows municipalities to reduce the risks associated with digitalization and to test innovations before investing.
In the same spirit of co-creation with public stakeholders, LIST and the Union of Luxembourg Cities and Municipalities (SYVICOL) have joined forces to accelerate the deployment of innovative solutions within Luxembourg municipalities. This partnership aims to improve citizens’ quality of life and support sustainable local development. The project facilitates collaboration on key areas such as data management and integration, digital twins and decision support, smart mobility, sustainable buildings and energy, waste and water management, urban safety, and citizen engagement via digital tools. Together, LIST and SYVICOL are launching a new wave of concrete projects to transform urban challenges into sustainable opportunities and strengthen innovation for the benefit of local communities.
This commitment to experimentation is finally embodied in the flagship project of the OHMIO autonomous shuttle operated by the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois (CFL). In 2025, LIST proudly contributed to its launch. This milestone for smart mobility in Luxembourg, celebrated in the presence of government officials, builds on work conducted as part of the FNR-funded COMBO project, where our teams explored potential uses for these shuttles by integrating capabilities enabled by 5G connectivity and advanced optimization systems. Building on this experience, LIST intends to continue its research towards even more automated solutions, leveraging the potential of future 6G technologies.
