Renewable and Clean Energy Systems

Faced with the pressing challenges of climate change, energy security, and industrial transformation, ambitious and innovative solutions are essential. LIST is fully committed to this transition by conducting cutting-edge research on the production, storage, transmission, and efficient use of clean and renewable energy. Our ambition is to pave the way for “5D” energy systems — decarbonized, diversified, distributed, digitized, and democratic — which will form the foundation of tomorrow’s industrial and societal infrastructure, both in Luxembourg and across Europe.

Luxembourg has taken a decisive step in its energy transition with the launch of the National Centre of Excellence in Research (NCER) – Data Driven Energy Transition (D2ET) initiative, which will provide the country with a national digital twin of its energy systems. This platform will help all stakeholders — public authorities, regulators, local governments, industry, and Citizens — to make data-driven decisions to accelerate the achievement of national climate goals. By consolidating and cross-referencing data from electricity, heat, gas, and hydrogen, D2ET will enable the simulation, comparison, and optimization of energy scenarios while integrating economic, environmental, and social dimensions. The platform will thus become a true decision-making tool, a testing ground for evaluating public policies before their implementation, and a hub for innovation where energy stakeholders can assess their strategic choices.

At the heart of this ambitious initiative, LIST plays a leading role. The institute is responsible for developing the digital twin, integrating artificial intelligence, and designing the data architecture, making D2ET one of the most advanced energy transition platforms in Europe. Alongside the University of Luxembourg’s SnT, the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER), CREOS, and ENCEVO, LIST contributes its expertise in energy infrastructure, modeling, and digital innovation to make Luxembourg a global pioneer in the use of digital twins for the energy transition. Supported by the FNR through the NCER programme, this initiative reflects LIST’s ambition to harness data, simulation, and innovation to create a smarter, more resilient, and more sustainable energy system.
