Supporting the Space Economy

Today, many essential services rely on space technologies. Telecommunications depend heavily on satellites, while satellite imagery supports sectors such as precision agriculture, and enables rapid response during natural disasters to support emergency operations and humanitarian aid. In this context, LIST helps strengthen key knowledge and skills in the space sector in Luxembourg.

LIST is participating in three new projects funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) as part of a call for proposals focused on the development of Earth digital twins based on Earth observation. These initiatives aim to create advanced tools that combine satellite data, artificial intelligence, and environmental modeling to improve the understanding and management of challenges related to climate change.

The first project, SAVECROPS4EU, will develop a digital twin dedicated to European agriculture to improve crop monitoring, seasonal forecasts, and the simulation of agricultural scenarios. By integrating satellite data, crop growth models, and machine learning techniques, the project will provide farmers with detailed information on crop health and soil conditions to support more sustainable and productive decisions.

LIST is also contributing to a project focused on urban resilience, aimed at better anticipating and managing heat islands and urban flooding. By combining satellite data, modeling, and artificial intelligence, this project will develop operational solutions for climate risk assessment, drawing in particular on a patented radar technology from LIST for precise flood mapping and monitoring of urban infrastructure.

Finally, a third project will address coastal risks linked to climate change, such as erosion, flooding, and algal blooms. Using advanced models that integrate multiple environmental factors, researchers will develop risk maps and forecasts to better anticipate the impact of sea-level rise and extreme weather events.
By contributing to these projects, LIST is strengthening its role in developing innovative solutions based on Earth observation and digital twins, in support of environmental sustainability and territorial resilience.
